What is the need for use of INSULATING VARNISH?

As you know, all electrical machines run when electric current pass through its coil or winding. The electric current has two components; one component gives active power, which is being use for generating useful energy and other component gives reactive power, which generate heat in electric machines. The other component also called loss current. The electric machines run in very adverse environment of humidity, chemical vapor, temperature and vibration. As result of this adverse environment, three different kind of stress (Thermal, mechanical and chemical) work at a time on machine, which cause failure of machines. Insulating varnishes is specially formulated to protect the electrical machine from these stresses, so that life and safety of electrical machine is enhanced.

What is the Definition of Varnish?

The solution of resin and solvent without pigment are called varnish.

How are Insulating varnish Classified

Insulating varnishes are classified on the basis of drying nature and their thermal class. According to drying nature varnish is classified as air drying and baking type. According to thermal classes the varnishes are classified as A, B, C, E, F and H.

What are common Application areas of NEOVAR

NEOVAR is used for applications in transformer, chokes, coils, all kinds of motor, fans, circuit board, insulation tapes, glass laminates, AC/ DC motor, generator, alternator, armature etc.

How is NEOVAR applied on electrical machines?

It is applied by dipping, pouring, brushing and vacuum impregnation.

The small component like small transformer, chokes etc can be applied by dipping the component in varnish tank and hang for drying. The bigger component like motor, rotor, alternator etc can be applied by brushing/pouring. Some precision electrical machine or coils, which runs on very high voltage like ignition coil, fly back transformer, are applied by vacuum impregnation.

What is vacuum impregnation method of applying varnish?

In vacuum impregnation method, varnish is poured in One tank ( 1st tank). 1st tank is connected to 2nd tank. In second tank, electrical components are placed in tray. Vacuum is applied from 2nd tank. Due to applying of vacuum, varnish come to 2nd tank and impregnate the component kept in the tray. This is most precision method of impregnation. In this method varnish reach to every turns of coil and ensure component winding 100% free from air entrapment in coil. Air entrapment may be a cause for failure of components sometime.

Different grades of NEOVAR varnish with their drying nature, thermal class & major application.

GRADE NATURE OF DRYING THERMAL CLASS TYPICAL APPLICATION

F 501 Baking F All kinds of motor, alternator, AC induction motor, transformer, fans, chokes which run in adverseEnvironment
B 303 Baking B High voltage motor, transformer etc
NEOVAR Red / Grey Air Drying B All kinds of motors, alternators, generators, fans, and transformers and chokes as finishing varnish.

Why thinner is added in varnish & how much quantity of thinner to be added?

The thinners are added to varnish to improve penetration property of varnish, so that Neovar reach to every turn of coil. The quantity of thinner added as per permissible limit given in technical data sheet. Normally, with 1 part of varnish 1part of thinner added but the thinner quantity can be increased or decreased depending upon method of application.

How to choose insulating varnish for a particular application?

The insulating varnishes are chosen as per following method

a) First identify the thermal class of electrical machine on which varnish to be applied from customer.

b) Choose a varnish whose thermal class is matching to that of electrical machine but not less than of machine class.

c) If you have baking facility then choose baking type varnish or else stick to air drying varnish

What do you mean by Flexibility of varnish
It is defined as property of varnish film and it’s determined by resistance to crack when copper wire specimen coated with varnish has been bent for 180 degree around the mandrel.

What is Volume resistivity
This is defined as resistance of material to leakage of electric current through its body. It is measured as Ohm –cm.

What is Dissipation factor
It is a measure of electrical losses and significantly it should be minimum as possible for efficient performance of insulating material.

What is Dielectric constant
It is ability of insulator to store the energy and hence high dielectric constant is desired

What is Flash point
It is property of material and defined as the minimum temperature at which material would catch fire when vapor pressure of and atmospheric pressure attains equilibrium.

What does Dilution Ability & Compatibility signify
It denotes the percentages in volume of thinner that can be added before the first turbidity appear.

What is BDV (Break down voltage) or insulation resistance/ dielectric strength?

The maximum electrical voltage at which insulating material fails for insulation is called BDV. It is measured in terms of KV/mm.

What does Thermal class or temperature index indicate and what are they?

The thermal class or temperature index is related to temperature resistance of insulating varnish. The thermal class is denoted by A, E, B, F, H and C. These letters correspond to particular temperature resistance A=1050C, E=1200C , B=1300C , F=1550C, H=1800C, C=2000C

What is electrical resistance?

The properties of material or substance, which retards the flow of current through it when voltage is applied across its terminal, are called electrical resistance. The electrical resistance measured in Ohm- cm.
